Advice by Parents for Parents

At The Balance, we share valuable insights and advice from parents whose children have benefitted from the life-changing support of The Balance. These parents understand the challenges of raising at-risk or homeless teens and offer a unique perspective on how The Balance has helped their children make positive, lasting changes. Through their stories, we aim to provide guidance, inspiration, and reassurance to other parents facing similar struggles, showing that transformation is possible even in the most difficult circumstances.

The advice shared here comes directly from those who have walked the difficult road of parenting a child in crisis and have learned a lot from the positive impact of The Balance’s programs.

"The hardest part for me was learning to let go of my own expectations. I wanted to control everything—fix my daughter’s problems, set the right conditions for her recovery—but I had to stop. She didn’t need fixing; she needed time to heal on her own. I had to stop holding on to the idea that everything could be perfect and instead focus on being present for her during her roughest days. Recovery doesn’t always look the way we think it should, and that’s okay."
